Treaty of Masulipatam | UPSC
Masulipatam was signed on 23 February 1768 AD.
Under this treaty the Hyderabad state of India came under British control.
The First Mysore War began in 1767, in which the East India Company tried to stop the expansionist policies of Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore.
Although initially the Nizam of Hyderabad was with the British, it soon separated from the British.
Later when the British accepted the Nizam as the ruler of Balaghat, he again joined them at Masulipatam (Machilipatnam).
At the end of the war in 1769, the British recognized the sovereignty of Mysore over Hyderabad.
This was a great example of how the British East India Company is playing tricks and diplomacy in India.
Due to this deception, the Nizam was forced to support Hyder Ali against the British in 1779.
Lord Cornwallis tried to back the words given by the company in 1788–1789.
As a result, the Third Mysore War (1790–1792 AD) started.
The subsequent war ended only after the British had strong control over both Mysore and Hyderabad.
