Treaty of Alinagar | UPSC

The Treaty of Alinagar was signed between Nawab Siraj-ud-daulah of Bengal and the East India Company on 9 February 1757, in which the British were represented by Clive and Watson.

This treaty was done after the British regained Calcutta.

By this treaty, the Nawab and the East India Company reconciled on the following terms -

  • The East India Company was again given all the facilities of trade on the basis of the orders of the Mughal emperor.

  • Permission to repair the fort was also given in Calcutta

  • The right to mint coins was also given to them in Calcutta and the damage done to the British by the Nawab's occupation of Calcutta was also accepted and the two sides promised each other to maintain peace.

  • A month after the signing of the treaty, the British defied it, invading Chandranagar, a French settlement on the banks of the Ganges river, a few miles from Calcutta.

  • In the second month of June, the British, together with Mir Zafar and other Nawab's rival officers, hatched a conspiracy against Siraj-ud-daula.

  • As a result of this conspiracy, the Battle of Plassey took place on 23 June 1757 AD, in which Siraj-ud-daula was defeated and killed.
