India's first Thunderstorm Research Testbed to be built in Odisha


As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the country's first hurricane-storm research center will be built in Balasore, Odisha.


key points-


The objective of setting up a storm-storm research center in Balasore is to reduce the loss of life and property due to sky, a first-class monsoon testing center is being developed near Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh.


Both these projects are in the time planning stage. Detailed project report is being prepared.


The Thunder Storm Testing Center will be set up in collaboration with Indian Meteorological Department, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).


DRDO, ISRO and IMD already have their units in Balasore .


On average, more than 350 people are killed in Orissa every year due to lightning strikes. A total of 3218 people have died by submitting by 2019-20.


India Meteorological Department (IMD)


It is the premier agency for weather forecasting, meteorological observations and seismology. This department works under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. It was established in the year 1875. It is headquartered in Delhi.
