There are total 3 sites in Madhya Pradesh which are declared as World Heritage Sites.


1. Khajuraho groups of monuments (1986)

The Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a group of Hindu , Buddhist and Jain temples.


  • The temples are famous for their nagara-style architecture.

  • Built by rulers of Rajput Chandela Dynasty.

  • The temples are dedicated to Hindu Gods (Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu).



2. Buddhist monuments of Sanchi (1989)

  • Sanchi has a group of Palaces, Temples, Pillars and Monasteries.

  • Stupa is the oldest stone structure in India which has the teachings of Lord Buddha engraved in it.

  • Located in Raisen District of Madhya Pradesh.




3. Rock shelters of Bhimbetka (2003)


(a) It is a UNESCO world heritage site that consists of

  • Seven hills

  • 750 rock shelters distributed over 10 kilometres

(b) The Rock shelters of Bhimbetka are an archaeological site in Central India located in Raisen District of Madhya Pradesh.

(c) Caves consists of cave paintings of animals and also early evidence of dance and hunting.

(d) The Bhimbetka site has the oldest known rock art in the Indian subcontinent.

It is know as one of the largest prehistoric complexes.
