Pahaadi Style | Sculpture and Painting
Geographically, like other areas of India, a modified form of ancient Indian painting tradition continued to develop in the mountainous regions of Kashmir, Punjab-Himachal and Uttar Pradesh. This style shows the incorporation of Mughal, Rajasthani and local folk elements.
There are several subgenres of Pahaadi style, the main ones being:
Bundi Style
This style emerged with certain changes in Bundi art. This style was patronized by King Ummed Singh. This style was an independent branch of the Mewar style. The Barhamsa painting made in this style is particularly notable.
Jammu style
Raja Balwant Singh, who resembled the Guler style, was encouraged by Raja Balwant Singh. Most of the paintings in this style are individual portraits of kings. Some paintings are also related to Ramayana, Dashavatar and Krishna Leelas. The inspection of the horses and Kathak dancers of Raja Balwant Singh are excellent paintings of this style.
Basauli style
The oldest evidence of Basauli style is found during the time of King Kripal Singh (17th century). Both social and religious paintings have been done in this style. In religious paintings, texts like Bhagavata Purana, Geet Govind, Ras Manjari etc. have been made the basis. Many paintings are based on Ragamalas. Bhav prone lotus like Nayan is a unique feature of this style.
Chamba Style
Influenced by Basauli and Guler style, this style got patronage of Raja Raj Singh. The themes of this genre are related to religious and heroine distinctions. The border is decorated with balloons.
Guler Style
This style originated in the early 18th century. Building and trees are evidence of its similarity with the Basoli style. Raja Dilip Singh patronized this style. The credit for reshaping this style goes to a painter named Nainsukh. In this style, a confluence of sentiment, elegance and beauty is seen in the pictures in a woman.
